# OpenAI will cut its models off from Cursor on 12 November

> OpenAI told SpaceX, which acquired the code editor Cursor, that it will end the contract that puts OpenAI models inside Cursor, with a proposed shutoff on 12 November 2026. OpenAI says it does not trust SpaceX to…

On Friday, 28 August, OpenAI said it had notified SpaceX that it intends to end its contract to provide OpenAI models to Cursor, the AI code editor that SpaceX acquired. The proposed shutoff date is 12 November 2026. OpenAI says that is the longest notice its contract allows, chosen so developers keep access through Cursor for as long as possible.

Cursor lets its users choose which company's model does the work, and OpenAI's models are among the choices. People who use them there have about ten weeks before that option goes away, and OpenAI says it will not provide its future models to Cursor at all.

## The reason OpenAI gives

OpenAI's post says it cannot be confident SpaceX will use its technology within OpenAI's terms of service, citing what it calls its experience with Elon Musk's companies breaking contracts. It points to Twitter, which it says is now part of SpaceX, and to xAI, also now part of SpaceX, which OpenAI says Musk admitted under oath had violated OpenAI's terms. It also mentions Astra, its upcoming model, as a reason it wants tighter control over who uses its models.

These are OpenAI's claims. Its post does not include a response from SpaceX or from Cursor, and we have not seen one in the sources we used for this post.

OpenAI says its custom agreement with Cursor allowed it to cancel within a limited window after a change of control, and that the two companies had worked together for nearly four years. It says developers who rely on its models in Cursor are the people most affected, and that it is ready to help them through the transition.

## What to do before 12 November

If your team uses Cursor with OpenAI models, write down which tasks depend on them, such as code review, refactors or the agent mode. Run the same tasks this month with another model that Cursor offers and compare the results. If OpenAI models are the reason you chose Cursor, look at the editors and agents that will keep offering them, and decide before the deadline instead of on the day the option disappears.

## What we think

This is a reminder that the model inside a tool is a contract between two companies, and either side can end it. Teams that wrote their prompts and habits around one model in one editor are the ones who will feel this most. Keeping a second model tested and ready costs a few hours now and makes a change like this a small one.
